You begin the story as Neku Sakuraba, a 15 year-old boy with a hobby for music and graffiti. He wakes up one day in Shibuya shopping district of Tokyo, Japan. While flipping a black pin in his hand, he discovers that he is able to read the minds of others with the skull embedded pin. He receives a sudden text message that reads: "Reach 104. You have 60 minutes. Fail, and face erasure. -The Reapers". A timer of 60 minutes appears on his right hand. Throughout the journey, Neku steps out of his social comfort zone and works together with other thrown into the Reapers' game, such as Shiki, Yoshiya, Raimu, and Daisukenojo. The game rules prevents Neku and the others from leaving the district and if the game is not completed, all of them will cease to exist.

And their game is far from simple, as Neku and his allies must defeat physical manifestations of people's negative thoughts and feelings called, the "Noise," to continue their adventure. With their existence hanging in the balance, Neku must use his psychic talents to gather clues to beat the game and to survive the onslaught of the Noise that sweep through the roads of Shibuya...
