Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth - Revisit The PS1 Classic On PSP

So, it's 1999, and I'm sitting in my friend's living room. He's showing me a new RPG he bought – Valkryrie Profile. In the game, main character Lenneth uncovers her own past by recruiting the souls of fallen warriors and sending them onto the afterlife. In addition to sidestepping several cliche RPG story tropes, Lenneth's story has a unique and compelling look – Valkyrie Profile is presented in a 2D 'profile' view, so that the dungeon crawling is a lot more like playing an old-school platformer.

The game was awesome, so I ran out to buy my own copy. Except I couldn't find it. And the Internet was no help, either – the PS1 disc can net $100+ pricetags on all the usual auction sites. As with so many great games of that era, a (sometimes) foolish belief that Japan's niche games wouldn't perform well stateside led to a drastic undershipping of the game in the West.

Times have changed, and Square Enix has a new outlook on making the gems in its library accessible to everyone. Though the publisher is loath to share its wealth via the Wii Shop or PlayStation Network, it's happy to port its classics to handheld consoles, taking advantage of the DS's rampant popularity and the PSP's impressive growth to bring old classics to new gamers.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth is a perfect example of this. A remake of a classic game with limited availability, it's not only a necessary remake, but also one of the best games on the PSP platform to date. The remake improves on the original game's localization significantly and includes new voice over dialogue, and the anime sequences have been replaced with full motion video that stands out as some of the most impressive seen on the handheld to date.

Of course, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth can be hard to find now, too. Don't worry – your pals at GameQuest Direct have a solution. We offer factory-new reprints of classic games like Pocket Fighter and Disgaea, and bound-to-be-classics like Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. Don't settle for preowned or gutted games.
