After Ubisoft's wild success with Assassin's Creed, there were murmurs that the Assassin's brand would serve as a replacement for the Prince of Persia franchise. After all, the two games have a lot of genetic material in common, and Creed's unique interface seems to realize the goal of the Prince of Persia games more fully than they can.
But don't count the Prince out just yet. Whenever the Prince of Persia brand has been threatened with irrelevance, it has reinvented. The first game was itself a reinvention of traditional PC gaming with its real-time gameplay. When the first Prince of Persia saga – based on the Arabian Nights stories – grew stale (around 1999 when Prince of Persia 3D hit shelves), Ubisoft began developing The Sands of Time, the three-game Prince of Persia epic that would update classic elements of the series, introduce time travel as a workable game mechanic (a feat that has not been replicated despite several attempts), and become an absolute sales juggernaut for French developer Ubisoft.
With the end of the Sands of Time trilogy in Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, there has been little more than rumors about the future of the series – the registration of PrinceofPersiaProdigy.com by Ubi almost two months ago confirmed that a new game was on the way.
The next Prince of Persia will be a departure from both prior storylines, delving into a more fantasy-themed world. In addition to the platforming action that Prince players expect, the game reportedly touts an increased emphasis on one-on-one sword duels. Screenshots and concept art evoke a hand-drawn, cel-shaded feel reminiscent of Square's SaGa games or the fan-favorite Okami.
