Classic Game Corner: Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks

Although the new console generation is in full swing right now, that doesn't mean gamers should forget about the great niche games of the last gen. With the backwards compatibility issues that the 360 and PS3 have, many gamers still have their OXboxs and PS2s around, and plenty of time in between tentpole releases to go back and play the lineup of great games that you may have missed.

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks takes the universe of the Mortal Kombat franchise and brings the classic fighting game into the action-adventure genre. This isn't new; as far back as the PS1, Midway tried the same thing with a Sub-Zero spinoff game that was mediocre at best, and the less said about Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, the better. What sets Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks apart from those previous games is that Shaolin Monks is actually good. Starring fan-favorite Kombatants Liu Kang and Kung Lao (who are, not surprisingly, shaolin monks), the game kicks its way through the story events in the background of the first two MK games, revealing the answers to some mysteries (the origin of Sub-Zero's scar, for instance) along the way.

Along with some trademark bits of Midway humor, Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks delivers a fast-paced, deep action experience that lets players unleash the MK series' trademark fatalities, use the environment against enemies, and power up their skills and abilities by earning experience points. One highlight of the game's 'Multi-Directional Kombat System' is the ability to carry combo attacks across multiple opponents. Like any Mortal Kombat release, the game features unlockable characters and a new type of Fatality – the Multality, which can dispatch a group of bad guys simultaneously.
