Just like the previous game in the Mortal Kombat series, Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat Deception is part of a tightly plotted story leading into the events of Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Its shocking opening sequence alone indicates that the MK franchise is moving forward, as the deadly alliance of Quan Chi and Shang Tsung hand Raiden's alliance of heroes a crushing defeat. Deception introduces 9 new characters to the Mortal Kombat saga – including Onaga, the dragon lord, as a new major antagonist.
Mortal Kombat Deception also improves on the concept of stage interactivity introduced in earlier games, with arena-specific weaponry, destructible boundaries and death traps that can kill a fighter instantly. Character personalization, something the series made great strides toward in Deadly Alliance, continues to improve in Deception, with character-specific victory poses, rises and throws. Sub-Zero, for instance, recovers from a lost round by lifting himself up with ice.
A greater emphasis on Fatalities returns to the franchise with Mortal Kombat Deception, as well. Where Deadly Alliance only offered one Fatality per fighter, each of the kombatants in Deception has two unique Fatalities and a 'hara-kiri' move they can use to deny their opponent the chance to deliver a Fatality to them. The latter feature had been rumored in the MK fan community since Mortal Kombat II and appears for the first time in Deception.
Deception also features alternate game modes, another staple of 'next-gen' MK games (Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon). In addition to a refinement of Konquest mode that now follows one of the new characters as he trains and discovers the secrets of Onaga's return, Deception includes other Kombat-themed diversions like a chess game and Puzzle Kombat, a take on Capcom's popular Super Puzzle Fighter series of games.
