Mirror's Edge Hits The Ground Running

With Holiday 2008 shaping up to be even more expensive than Holiday 2007, it's refreshing to see a big publisher like Electronic Arts take a chance on releasing a fresh, potential gamebreaker like Mirror's Edge amid the flood of sequels and lookalikes and inevitably tough-to-find first party Wii games that shoppers will be inundated with this Winter.

Developed by Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment – the Swedish masterminds behind the Battlefield series of first-person shooters, Motorhead and the fan-favorite Secret Agent Barbie: Royal Jewels Mission for the GBA – Mirror's Edge builds on the solid first-person experience provided in Battlefield and wedding it to the high-altitude, free-running parkour style gameplay that hearkens back to 2007's Ubisoft hit Assassin's Creed.

Players in Mirror's Edge take the role of Faith, a 'runner' – a courier between organized crime groups - in a futuristic totalitarian society. The story follows Faith's struggle to free her sister, currently a captive of the government. Runners like Faith live off-the-grid, not relying on modern communication because it is monitored by the police state. DICE and its parent company, Electronic Arts, are developing Mirror's Edge as a multi-game saga, stating that Faith's conflict with the government will be the focus of “the first few games.”

In order to create the most immersive game experience possible, the developers behind Mirror's Edge have implemented some innovative features that serve to redefine the way players interact with an FPS game. First and foremost, the graphical HUD has totally vanished from the game. Faith's health is tracked by the desaturation of the game world's bright colors, the camera gives a realistic first-person view of the main character running, leaping and swinging. Because the realistic shaking of the camera might be nauseating to some players, the user interface does include a reticle in the center of the screen that serves to focus the user's vision.

Mirror's Edge is scheduled for a Mid-November release. Instead of standing in Christmas shopping season lines at the mall, order your copy from GameQuestDirect.com. Our games are always new and factory-sealed, so you know you're spending your hard-earned cash on a reliable product.
