Forget The Filler; Play Dragonball Z Fighting Games
Akira Toriyama's Dragonball Z is one of the most celebrated mangas of the past three decades, and the accompanying anime series definitely isn't a slouch in terms of viewer loyalty. Since the series has called it quits, it's still seen brisk sales of DVDs and tankobons, but the only source of new DBZ content has been Atari's Dragonball Z fighting games.
The Dragon Ball franchise is venerable enough that there have been Dragon Ball games available on cassette tape. But it wasn't until the post-SNES generation that the ever-growing list of Dragonball Z fighting games has been available in the United States.
Gamers with a Nintendo Wii or Sony PlayStation 2 can turn to the popular Budokai Tenkaichi series of games, the fourth of which is due later this year. These Dragonball Z fighting games are noteworthy because of their 3rd person follow point of view and evolutionary story mode. Rumors around the Internet are indicating that Budokai Tenkaichi 4 will include a character creator, allowing players to make their own Toriyama-inspired fighters. The Wii versions of the Budokai Tenkaichi games feature some of the smoothest implementation of the console's motion sensing control capabilities.
If you're looking for a more old-school sensibility from Dragon Ball Z fighting games, check out this summer's Dragonball Z: Burst Limit, available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Burst limit has a more 2D view of the action and so-called “Drama Pieces,” in-battle cutscenes that can affect the course of a fight. Fighters can also play online over Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network.
If you're a portable gamer, you can check out the Shin Budokai series Dragonball Z fighting games on the PSP. Shin Budokai and Shin Budokai: Another Road are a collaboration between the main DBZ fighting game franchise popular overseas and the Budokai Tenkaichi games.
If the DS is your handheld of choice, the card battle action of Dragonball Z: Harukanaru Densetsu, or the sequel to the hit Supersonic Warriors.
