Set to be released by Activision on November 11, 2008, Call of Duty World At War will be a refreshing and more intense take on first person shooter games. Since being previewed at the Xbox Live Marketplace in June, World at War has had players on edge, waiting for this exciting new installment to the Call of Duty series.
Featuring a more mature theme than previous installments of the series, Call of Duty World At War will set the player in the Pacific and Eastern fronts of World War II. In the story mode on the new game, players will participate in two campaigns: one featuring the US Marine Corps battling the Japanese in the Pacific and the other following the Soviet Red Army raiding Berlin. In addition to this new setting, player features like swimming, the use of flamethrowers, and multiple ways to complete missions will successfully engage audiences worldwide. Six new multiplayer game modes have also been announced for this new installment, including team deathmatch, hardcore, multi-bomb search and destroy, free-for-all, war, and capture the flag. This open-ended approach to gaming will no doubt be another success for the series, perhaps even making Call of Duty World At War the best-selling in history.
World at War is the result of a two-year long development cycle, far surpassing that of Activision's Call of Duty 3. Improvements to the engine include enhancements to the physics model allowing for environments to be more destructible. Actors Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman have also stepped on for the project as voice actors for main characters.
